Artist's Statement The impressionists aesthetic in landscape painting has always had a universal appeal. It is a pure aesthetic experience. This pursuit of beauty and capturing the fleeting moment through of mark making and color. From impressionism to plein air painting today, this pursuit has been obsessed over by the artist and embraced by the public. Yet, this popular aesthetic appeal that has always made me uneasy in my landscape painting. If landscape painters treat the average landscape painting as a quick sketch, like a runner sprinting to the finish. Then I wished to try to run a marathon and push the painting as far as my patience will allow. I also demand of myself to make the paintings at the location taking my information from life and not in the studio from a photo. I am not against a painter using photography. I do feel those artists that paint from a photo tends to copy it or use it as a filter and design the painting. Design has a connotation of predetermining the result. I wish to discover what my painting will become. If the paintings are done at the location, then it becomes a wrestling match with optics and perception. The result of this struggle is not so predetermined.
